DUPONT CEO REITERATES IMPORTANCE OF ISO 14001 FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT (DEMO)
Earlier this year, ISOFocus+, the news section of the International Standards Organization (ISO), interviewed DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman. Also Chair of the Board of DuPont since 2009, Kullman improved the company’s ability to build partnerships, collaborate, and deliver solutions. Under her leadership, DuPont also adopted ISO 14001 on top of ISO 9001, which the company first took up some 20 years ago. When asked on how DuPont has implemented ISO standards and what she still expects of future revisions to the certification, Kullman answered:
The development of ISO 9001 has helped us to considerably improve our processes, both for our customers and our full value chain. We also use the requirements of ISO 9001 to develop our own control processes, including appropriate key performance indicators which help us stay focused in daily business activities. The DuPont Production System in place at our global operating sites incorporates all aspects of manufacturing and continual improvement in a holistic, standards-driven approach to operational excellence. We utilize the ISO 14001 system as part of our global environmental management system, and we take a standards-based approach to the management of occupational safety. This disciplined process has led to a trend of continued long-term improvement.
Kullman added that international standards like ISO 9001 and 14001 have enabled operational standardization and excellence for their enterprise across the globe. These standards have also played key roles in strengthening their relationships with other companies because they established clear and specific performance expectations. These expectations, in turn, helped the company forge common understanding and mutual trust with their partners.
ISOFocus+ also noted that DuPont experts take part in at least 10 ISO technical committees that are developing standards for agricultural machinery, fire safety, and nanotechnology. Kullman then pointed out that such collaborations enable the company to help discover solutions to problems with food and energy demands.
The interview only highlighted the usefulness of ISO 14001 as a tool for meeting such goals. This is because it sets the criteria for the development of a company’s environmental management system to reduce waste management costs, lower distribution costs, save on consumption of materials, and improve public image. Companies that need assistance with ISO certification for 14001 can approach a registrar like International Standards Authority (ISA) to begin the process.
