According to Katie Bird, ISO head of communication and content strategies, ISO certification 9001 revisions happen every five years to ensure that it remains relevant to modern times. The Committee Draft stage is the earliest stage of revision wherein ISO members from different countries convene for two to four months to draft and comment on the proposed new or revised standards. Although this stage of the revision process is not considered the “official public comment stage,” ISO members may still get input from the public. The revision may bring new chellanges to organizarions currently certified to ISO 9001:2008. this means that Spolicies and procedures implemented in their companies may soon have to be revised in order to meet the requirements of the revised standard. . However, final revision and its release is a relatively long process. After the committee draft stage, experts nominated by ISO members will continue to meet to discuss possible issues before the organization eventually publishes the Draft International Standard. The next step is the aforementioned public comment stage which, as the term suggests, is the period where anyone can contact a national member body with feedback on the proposed new standard—Katie Bird says that this will likely take place in the first half of 2014. The new version of the ISO 9001 is expected to be published by the end of 2015. However, this is also expected to be followed by an additional transition period of around two years.
